The Beginning…

In 1986, Allen & Mary Beck formed Beck Consulting in Fresno, California. They were newlyweds, had just purchased their first home, and had decided to stay in the area after their employer, Price Waterhouse, closed its local office. Their focus was on business planning, troubled company workouts, and technology/software issues. A few of our early customers engaged us to find a new ERP software solution. We recommended an application called Macola, but there was no local support for the product and our client prevailed upon us to get into the software business. The rest is history…

The Fresno Years…

Macola was well received in the central California market, and our business quickly grew to over 100 clients. A large portion of these customers represented food processing and agricultural-dependent businesses. Within this especially vast service area, Beck acquired a reputation for being willing to travel, as well as take on complex businesses. This in turn led to new opportunities outside the region and further geographic diversification of our client base.

San Francisco Bay Area Move…

Central California’s economy was hard-hit by the recession in the late 80’s, especially in the ag-related industries, and we found that all of our new client opportunities were being generated in the Bay Area. After taking on a major implementation at San Francisco-based Ghirardelli Chocolate, which required an onsite presence on a weekly basis, we determined that it made sense to relocate the business. The implementation and training methodologies we had developed allowed us to make this move without abandoning our Central California customers, and a large number of those clients are still with us to this day. As the business continued to grow within the Bay Area, our ability to take on remote sites also made it possible for us to develop a presence outside of the state. While we continued to represent Macola software, the product experienced difficulties during the transition years to Windows, and there were serious concerns about how it would handle the impending Y2K problem. We could not see ourselves upgrading clients to a solution with these outstanding issues, so we began a search for a more modern enterprise software…

Today

As a result of our two-year search, we became a Navision partner in 1997. While Navision was little-known in the United States at the time, it was the largest software publisher for the small/medium business market in Europe, and we determined that it would provide a tremendous opportunity for growth. Navision was later acquired by Microsoft, eventually becoming the Microsoft Dynamics NAV product of today, with well over a million users worldwide. Today we are a Microsoft Gold Certified ERP Value Added Reseller (VAR) and a Certified Independent Software Vendor for Microsoft Dynamics NAV.

In celebration of our 30th birthday, we sat down with Allen and Mary for a day-long interview. To hear their thoughts on the company’s history, the evolution of software, and the philosophies that went into shaping Beck Consulting, click here.
